A router has a settings page you open in a browser, not through a special app. That's where you change the Wi-Fi name and password, see connected devices, or block users. The page address is a number, and the most common are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1.
How to log in to the router admin page
- Connect your device to that router. Through its Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. The admin page can't be opened from another network or over mobile data.
- Temporarily turn off mobile data on your phone, especially if the Wi-Fi has no internet. Some phones switch to mobile data automatically and ignore the Wi-Fi.
- Open a browser such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
- Type the address in the address bar, for example
192.168.1.1, then press Enter. Don't add "www" and don't type it into the Google search box. - Enter the admin username and password. Usually printed on the sticker under the router, and different from the Wi-Fi password.
Once in, the recommended first step is changing the default admin password. The rest of the setup order is in how to set up a new router.
Common router admin addresses
| Address | Often used by |
|---|---|
| 192.168.1.1 | Many ISP ONTs, ZTE, Huawei, Asus, and Linksys routers |
| 192.168.0.1 | Many TP-Link, D-Link, and older Tenda routers |
| 192.168.100.1 | Some fibre ONTs |
| 192.168.8.1 | Many 4G modems and routers |
| 192.168.31.1 | Xiaomi routers |
| 10.0.0.1 | Some routers and office networks |
Some brands also offer a name-based address, such as tplinkwifi.net, which points to the right router address. This
list is only a guide; the exact address can be found as shown below.
How to find your router's address
The admin page address is the same as the gateway or router address in your device's network settings.
- Android: Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the connected network, then look for "Gateway" or "Router". On some phones it's under "Advanced" or "Network details".
- iPhone: Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the (i) icon next to the network name, then look at "Router".
- Windows: open Command Prompt, type
ipconfig, then look at "Default Gateway". - macOS: System Settings, Network, Wi-Fi, Details, TCP/IP, then look at "Router".
Local addresses and how they're assigned are explained in local IPs and DHCP and how to find your IP address on a phone or laptop.
If 192.168.1.1 won't open
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Google search results appear | Type it in the address bar, or prefix it with http:// |
| "This site can't be reached" | Check the gateway address; the router may use another one |
| "Connection not secure" warning | Normal for router pages; continue if the address is right |
| Page keeps loading | Turn off mobile data and VPN, then try another browser |
| A different router's page opens | There are two routers in a chain; you reached the nearest one |
If your network uses two routers, such as the ISP's ONT and an extra router, each has its own admin page. See how to set up two Wi-Fi routers in one network.
If the admin password is rejected
- Don't confuse it with the Wi-Fi password. They're different.
- Check the router sticker. Many newer routers use a unique admin password per unit.
- ISP routers often have two account levels: a user account with limited access and a technician account. See ISP default router admin accounts.
- Forgot a password you changed? The only way is usually a factory reset, which wipes every setting. Read how to factory reset a router first, especially for ONTs that store connection details from the ISP.
What you can do once logged in
- Change the Wi-Fi password
- See who is using your Wi-Fi
- Block Wi-Fi users
- Update router firmware
- Secure your home router
Frequently asked questions
How do I log in to 192.168.1.1?
Connect your phone or laptop to that router's Wi-Fi or LAN cable, open a browser, type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar (not the search box), then enter the admin username and password printed on the sticker under the router. If it doesn't open, the router probably uses another address such as 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1.
Why won't 192.168.1.1 open?
The most common causes: the device isn't connected to that router, the router uses a different address, the address was typed into the search box so Google results appear, or mobile data is still on and taking over the connection. Check the gateway address in the device's Wi-Fi settings to find the right one.
What is the default router admin username and password?
Every brand differs, and many newer routers use a unique password per unit. Check the sticker on the bottom or back of the router. Old combinations like admin and admin are still used by some brands, but should be changed as soon as you log in.
Is 192.168.1.1 my internet IP address?
No. 192.168.1.1 is the router's local address inside your home network, used by millions of routers worldwide. Your internet IP address is a public address assigned by your ISP and differs from this one.
