Connecting a television to Wi-Fi looks like a five-minute job: choose the network, type the password, done. Until the network doesn't appear in the list, or appears but the video stops every few minutes.

One thing explains most of these complaints, and people rarely connect it.

Why televisions have the most trouble

A television combines three weaknesses at once:

  • A weak Wi-Fi receiver. This part isn't a priority for television makers, and its components are well below those in a phone from the same year.
  • Small antennas behind a metal body. The chassis and metal shielding inside a television attenuate signal, and the antennas often face the wall.
  • Placed furthest from the router. Living rooms are rarely in the same place as the internet cable's entry point.

And one more thing: a television demands the steadiest data stream in the house. 4K video consumes around 18 to 25 Mbps with no interruptions allowed.

The steps to connect it

Menus differ between brands, but the path is similar:

When typing the password, watch the capitalisation. On-screen television keyboards often start with a capital letter automatically, and that's a very frequent cause of "wrong password".

If the network doesn't appear in the list

The number one cause, and nearly always this: the television doesn't support 5 GHz.

Many televisions — including recent mid-range models — only support the 2.4 GHz band. If your router broadcasts both bands under different names, the TV will only see the 2.4 GHz one. If the router uses one name for both, there's usually no problem.

Other causes worth checking:

  • The network name contains emoji or punctuation. Televisions are fussier than phones about this. Use letters, numbers, and hyphens only.
  • The router is on channel 12 or 13. Some televisions built for other markets don't recognise those channels. Set the router to channel 1, 6, or 11.

  • The signal is too weak to be detected. Take a phone to the television's position and check signal strength there.

If it appears but won't connect

Forget the network and reconnect

A stored old entry often no longer matches after a password change. This is the first step and the one that most often works.

Unplug the television at the wall

Not just the power button. Unplug for a minute — televisions hold state in memory that standby mode doesn't clear.

Restart the router and wait fully

Allow two to three minutes for every light to settle before trying again.

Check the router's device limit

This is the most common complaint, and the most often mishandled. Upgrading the internet plan rarely helps, because the bottleneck sits between the router and the television — not between the router and the provider.

In order of effectiveness:

1. Run a LAN cable

A television doesn't move. One cable eliminates every signal problem at once, and in most homes this is what stops buffering for good. Nearly every smart TV has a LAN port on the back.

4. Lower the video quality as a test

Set the app to 1080p temporarily. If buffering stops, that proves the problem is connection capacity rather than the television. It's a quick and conclusive test.

One point about security

Smart televisions are among the devices whose firmware is updated least often, and some lose manufacturer support after a few years. They also collect fairly detailed viewing data.
