Before changing any settings, work out where the slowness is. Phone internet can be slow because of the phone, the Wi-Fi, or the carrier's network. The fix is different for each.
| Try this | If the result is | The problem is probably |
|---|---|---|
| Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data | Mobile data is fine | Wi-Fi or router |
| Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi is fine | Carrier or cellular signal |
| Open the same site on another phone | The other phone is fine | Your phone |
| Test speed in the morning and evening | Slow only at certain hours | Network congestion |
Measure speed as shown in how to test internet speed before and after trying the steps below, so you know which ones actually help.
Quick steps that often work
- Turn on airplane mode for 10 seconds, then off. The phone will look for a fresh tower or connection.
- Restart the phone. A stuck background app sometimes uses the connection constantly.
- Turn off any VPN you aren't using. VPNs, especially free ones, often slow the connection. See internet slow on a VPN.
- Turn off data saver and battery saver for a while. Both restrict background apps, so notifications and uploads feel slow.
- Check your remaining data. "Unlimited" plans are usually slowed after a certain threshold. Read what FUP is.
Set the network mode to 4G or 5G
Phones sometimes get stuck on an older network because of a setting. Make sure the phone uses the fastest network available:
- Android: open Settings, Connections or Network & internet, Mobile network, then Network mode or Preferred network type. Choose an option that includes 5G or 4G/LTE. Menu names vary by brand.
- iPhone: open Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data Options, Voice & Data, then choose 5G Auto or LTE. Also turn off Low Data Mode in the same menu if you don't need it.
Indoors, 5G is sometimes slower than 4G because its signal is blocked more easily by walls. If the 5G icon shows but the connection stutters, try 4G/LTE and compare. Why full bars can still be slow is covered in full signal but slow internet.
If it's only slow on Wi-Fi
- Use the 5 GHz network if your router supports it. It's faster at close range. The difference is in 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz.
- Forget the network and reconnect. This refreshes the IP address and settings from the router.
- Turn off automatic switching to mobile data if the phone keeps jumping. See phone keeps switching to mobile data.
- Check who's using the Wi-Fi. One device downloading something large can eat the bandwidth. See how to see who's on your Wi-Fi.
If every device in the house is slow, the phone isn't the problem. Go to how to fix slow Wi-Fi.
Switch to private DNS
DNS determines how quickly the phone finds a site's address. Changing DNS doesn't increase download speed, but it can make sites start loading sooner and fix sites that fail to load. On Android, open Settings, Connections, More connection settings, then Private DNS and enter a DNS provider's hostname. Full steps are in how to change DNS on a phone or laptop.
Reset network settings
If none of the above helps, reset network settings. Photos, chats, and apps stay. What's lost is saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth devices, and manual APN or VPN settings.
- Android: Settings, System or General management, Reset, then Reset network settings. The location varies by brand, so search Settings for "reset".
- iPhone: Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, then Reset Network Settings.
Problems with the phone itself
- Nearly full storage makes the phone slow to load anything, including web pages. Leave at least a few GB free.
- Update the system and apps. Updates often fix connection problems. If problems started after an update, read phone won't connect to Wi-Fi after an update.
- Avoid cleaner and signal booster apps. They don't speed up the connection and often use data for their own ads.
- Remove a metal or thick magnetic case if your phone's signal is weaker than other phones in the same spot.
When to contact your carrier
Contact your carrier if mobile data is slow in many places, other phones on the same carrier are slow too, and the steps above don't help. Mention the location, time, and speed test results. If the problem is your home internet, know your rights as a customer. If only one app feels slow, see certain apps won't open.
Frequently asked questions
How do I speed up internet on an Android phone?
Turn airplane mode on and off, make sure the network mode uses 4G or 5G, turn off data saver and any unused VPN, then free up storage if it's nearly full. If it's still slow, reset network settings. That doesn't delete photos or apps, but saved Wi-Fi passwords will be lost.
Can signal booster apps speed up the internet?
No. Signal strength depends on distance to the tower or router, obstacles, and the phone's antenna. An app can't change that. Some of these apps show excessive ads or ask for permissions they don't need.
Why is the signal full but the internet slow?
Full bars only mean the phone is close to a tower. Speed also depends on how many people share that tower, whether you've passed your plan's fair-use limit, and the network type. At busy hours, a crowded tower can be slow even with full bars.
Does resetting network settings delete data?
It doesn't delete photos, chats, or apps. It removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, paired Bluetooth devices, and manual VPN or APN settings. Note down your home Wi-Fi password before doing it.
